IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY
Graduated Spring 2016
I was born in Wilmington, DE, although grew up mostly in Phoenixville, PA, and later Batavia, IL. I come from a very large family, being the youngest of six as well as one of triplets. I acquired a love for drawing for early in my childhood, very rarely was I not seen with a pencil and paper in my hands.
I was always very imaginative and creative, drawing castles and writing stories, obsessing over grand estates and palaces seen in popular films at the time. It was also around this time that I began to discover the world of antiquity. The ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome always fascinated me. Reading about their customs and traditions, especially in architecture, provided me with a hunger for more. It wasn’t until my early teens that I began to really focus on architecture of a variety of styles throughout history, which opened my eyes to the world that was Versailles. I quickly became infatuated with the splendors of the Court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Some might even say I was madly obsessed with the gilded boiserie, exquisite textiles, etc. The works of famed designers including, Le Vau, Le Notre, Le Brun, Gabriel, and Ledoux, continued to inspired me throughout high school. It was then clear to me that I wanted to do what these men did and re-define good taste through architecture and interior design.
I am now heading into my last year at Iowa State University of Science and Technology. I will be graduating in the Spring of 2016 with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Interior Design. My accomplishments range from a variety of awards and honors including a Gold Medal from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in 2013, as well as 1st Prize in the 2015 Raymond Waites National Design Competition. My accomplishments have enabled me to do so much with interior design, like attending the International Home Furnishings Market at High Point, Maison et Object exhibition in Paris, and landing an internship with internationally-recognized interior designer, Juan Pablo Molyneux, in New York City.
My hobbies include drawing, drafting, photography, and music. As a devoted classicist, I have many ideas for my future. I’d like to establish a firm of my own, specializing in high-end residential interior design in New York. I aim to re-defining what is good taste through architectural interiors, paying homage to the lost worlds of antiquity, and drawing attention to the importance of the preservation of our nation’s historic buildings.
REBECCA VAN LUE
UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI
Graduated Fall 2016
My name is Rebecca Van Lue and this fall will be my final semester at the University of Missouri, pursuing an Architectural Studies degree with an emphasis in Interior Design. Aside from design, some of my hobbies include playing volleyball, playing piano, and spending time with my family. At school, I am a design intern for MU’s Residential Life Department, treasurer of Kappa Omicron Nu, member of the United States Green Building Council and several other student organizations, and am completing undergraduate research on immersive visualization and environmental psychology. Outside of MU, I was a junior facilitator for the Missouri Leadership Seminar, where I helped high school students improve their leadership skills and also completed over 100 hours of volunteer work. This experience was one I will cherish for my entire life. It taught me the beauty in helping others and how much even the smallest acts of kindness can positively impact others’ lives. I hope to impact the lives of others positively through my design work in the future as well.
After graduating, my dream is to move to the San Fransisco Bay area and find a career where I can design healing environments for restorative and healthcare facilities. I also plan to pursue my masters in Architecture, licensure in both interior design and architecture, and LEED GA certification shortly after graduating. As a future designer, my main goal is create spaces that are not only inspiring, but also functional, affordable, and environmentally responsible. I am incredibly excited to start my career in design and look forward to the experiences that lie ahead.
